With warm weather finally upon us, the car-top boat dock on the Genesee River at the end of Petten Street will reopen on Friday, June 5. Kayakers and canoeists who want a convenient and safe access point on the lower river will once again be able to launch their boats from this ADA-accessible facility.
The Petten Street dock was built in 2020 by the City of Rochester, with financial support from Genesee Brewing Company and Genesee RiverWatch donors. Open during the boating season, it provides easy access to the five-mile stretch of the Genesee from Rochester’s harbor upstream to Lower Falls.
In addition to fishing and recreation, this portion of the river includes Turning Point Park with its history as a major shipping point on Lake Ontario, Kelsey’s Landing – a departure point on the Underground Railway, Seth Green Island, and the middle segment sometimes called “a wilderness in the city” because of its remoteness, peaceful quiet, and abundant wildlife.
More good news: Stay tuned for more information about the two new launch sites we’re finishing up in Avon and Geneseo that will help people get on the water of the middle Genesee!
